After all the complaints about the lagging fingerprint scanner on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, Google CEO Rick Osterloh confirmed a week ago that the mid-range Pixel 6a uses a different biometric sensor than the one on the more expensive flagship models. And in the video, the sensor seems to work fast enough. The unboxing video was originally filmed by Google Retail Training France.
The mid-range Pixel 6a is offered in three colors.
With June’s Pixel Quarterly Feature Drop coming on Monday the sixth, Google is rumored to be dropping the big one for the Pixel 6 Pro. By “the big one” we mean Face Unlock that allows Pixel 6 Pro users to unlock their devices without having to struggle with the fingerprint sensor below the screen. Even if Face Unlock doesn’t show up during the next feature drop, those testing Android 13 beta 2 will report big improvements when it comes to the fingerprint scanners on the Pixel 6 line.

The video shows the Pixel 6a’s Sage and Charcoal colors, with a third color coming, Chalk. The phone has a 6.1-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 and an aspect ratio of 20:9. The screen refreshes at 60 Hz (60 times per second). It is equipped with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The same Google Tensor chipset used on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro resides under the hood of the Pixel 6a.
Google is bringing back a 12.2 MP camera sensor for the rear camera with an f/1.7 aperture. An 8MP camera sensor powers the front-facing selfie punch hole, and the battery (4306 mAh minimum) delivers up to 24 hours of use. The extreme battery saver allows you to prevent certain apps from running in the background, giving users a whopping 72 hours of battery life.
The Pixel 6a is priced from $449 or $18.71 per month for 24 months.
