How to screen a recording on Mac

You can screen the recording on your Mac by following a few simple steps.

Apple’s macOS software comes with a screen recording feature that is extremely useful if you want to send someone a tutorial, a bug you’re dealing with in your current version of iOS, or even highlights of an app or game.

The screen recording controls on Mac are not central, so many of you, especially those new to macOS, may not know how to find or use them.

So if you just switched to a Mac from a Windows computer or a Chromebook, or if you just forgot how to screen a recording on Mac, we’ll show you how. Once you’ve done it a few times, the process should be remembered.

Here’s how to screen a Mac on macOS Monterey, macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina, or macOS Mojave.

How to screen a recording on Mac

You don’t need to download an app to take a screen recording on Mac. You can record your screen using the macOS screenshot toolbar or the macOS QuickTime Player. First, we’ll show you how to screen a recording using the screenshot toolbar.

Follow these steps to open the screenshot toolbar on your Mac:

  1. Press Shift, Command and 5 at the same time.
  2. The screenshot toolbar appears at the bottom of your Mac’s screen.
  3. The three icons on the far left are for screenshots. Ignore that one. You use the icons in the middle of the toolbar. They have a shaded circle inside another circle.
  4. One option allows you to record the entire screen, while the other allows you to record a selected portion of your screen.
  5. Choose the option you want. To record a selected area of ​​your screen, drag to select the desired area and then click Record.
  6. To stop the recording, you need to click the Stop Recording button in the same toolbar.

You can use the macOS screenshot toolbar to record your screen.

After you stop recording, you will see a thumbnail of your video appear in the lower right corner of your screen. Swipe the thumbnail to the right to quickly save the video. Or you can do nothing and it will be saved automatically.

You can also click the thumbnail to open the recording for editing. You can also drag the thumbnail to other locations, such as the Recycle Bin or an email.

Control-clicking the thumbnail displays additional options.

In the screenshot above, you can see an Options drop-down menu next to the Record button. Allows you to change your shooting settings before capturing your images.

You can change where your clips are automatically saved, set a timer, and select whether to use the Mac’s built-in microphone.

You can also select whether to see your clip’s floating thumbnail, save your selections in the tool for next time, and choose whether to display a black circle around your pointer when you click in the recording.

You can also use Apple’s QuickTime player to record your Mac’s screen. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open the QuickTime Player from your Applications folder.
  2. Now click on File.
  3. Choose New Screen Recording from the menu bar.
