The number of cores your processor has is a component that determines your CPU performance. In the past, each processor had only one core. Modern CPUs have two to eighteen and above. Here’s how to check how many cores your processor has.

What do the processor core numbers mean?

The number of cores in your processor is one of many factors that determine the overall performance of your CPU. Basically, a core is a processing unit that performs certain actions. Every action you perform on your computer is processed by your CPU, no matter how small or large the task.

Each core can only perform one task at a time. Of course, the more cores your processor has, the more tasks it can perform, the more efficient it becomes. The fewer cores, the fewer tasks it can perform, the less efficient your CPU is.

That’s not to say that the more cores your CPU has, the better it is. As mentioned, it is just one of many components that determine CPU performance. You should also consider things like CPU type, multithreading or hyperthreading, clock speed, and so on. As a general rule of thumb, the newer the processor, the better it is. Just know it ain’t so all the time the case.

How many cores does my CPU have?

It’s easy to check how many cores your processor has, but the process differs slightly between the Mac and Windows operating systems.

Windows

To see how many cores your processor has in Windows, open the Task Manager by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Once open, click on the “Performance” tab.

Open Task Manager and go to the Performance tab.

Remark: If you don’t see the Performance tab, click “More details.”

On the next screen, you will see a lot of details about your CPU, including the number of cores it has.

mac

To check how many cores your process has on Mac, click the Apple icon in the top left corner of the desktop, then select “About This Mac” at the top of the drop-down menu.

Open the About This Mac window.

Then click on “System Report”.

Open your computer's system information.

You will then see the hardware overview of your device. This overview contains the total number of cores.

So there you have it. It’s pretty easy to check your processor’s core count, but again, the higher the number of cores you have doesn’t necessarily mean better performance. The best way to see if your computer can handle this task is to benchmark it.
