Two minute review
Sitting at a desk all day can have negative effects on your health, especially in the long run. That is why more and more people are opting for standing desks that allow them to work sitting or standing at the touch of a button. However, many standing desks lack the storage space that desk desks have. That’s why FlexiSpot has included a built-in storage drawer in its EG8 Comhar desk. The tray is more than roomy enough to store your laptop and other accessories when not in use, and the desk keyboard has three USB charging ports to make it easy to keep your smartphone and tablet fully charged.
Since the glass desktop of the EG8 Comhar may not be for everyone, FlexiSpot also makes a version of this desk with a wooden desktop. Despite only having one motor, the desk quickly adjusts from sitting to standing height and the motor noise level is less than 50 dB. If you are primarily a laptop user, the EG8 Comhar could be the perfect desk for you, but desktop users should look elsewhere as the lack of a cable management tray means you can’t use this desk with a PC or Mac and multiple monitor. †
FlexiSpot EG8 Comhar: Pricing and Availability
The EG8 Comhar standing desk is available in two different versions on the FlexiSpot website. The Comhar desk with glass topwhich is available in white or black, currently costs $454 at the time of writing, while the Comhar desk with wooden top (available in black, white, and maple) is slightly cheaper at $399. In terms of accessories, you can add just four caster wheels to the EG8 Comhar for $39.99, as there’s no first-party cable management tray available for this desk.
FlexiSpot EG8 Comhar : Design
The EG8 Comhar has a very unique design compared to other standing desks due to the glass top and the fact that the keyboard of the desk is integrated into the table top. Another major difference between this desk and similar offerings from FlexiSpot is that the EG8 Comhar is only available in one size: 47.3” (120cm) by 23.7” (60cm) with a thickness of 0.5” ( 1.27 cm).
In addition to the glass desktop, the EG8 Comhar also features an all-in-one keyboard that allows you to store up to four different height preferences. This means that two people can use the desk and have their own settings for both their preferred sitting and standing height. In addition to numbered preset buttons, you’ll find two USB-A ports and a single USB-C port for charging your smartphone, tablet and other devices. It’s worth noting that you have to touch one of the keys on the keyboard to enable charging and laptop charging is not supported.
If a glass desktop and a keyboard with multiple USB ports weren’t enough, the EG8 Comhar has another trick up its sleeve in the form of its built-in desk drawer. The drawer itself is 31.4 cm long, 66.5 cm wide and 3.98 cm deep. This means the tray is roomy enough for notebooks, pens, charging cables and even a laptop when not in use, but not deep enough for a mouse.
The EG8 Comhar has a single motor next to the right leg of the desk that allows the desk to be lowered all the way to 28.3 inches (71.8 cm) or to 47.6 inches (120.9 cm). The desk can support a maximum load of 49.89 kg and the desk frame has a support bar at the base for extra stability.
FlexiSpot EG8 Comhar : Installation
The EG8 Comhar desk ships to Mujahid Tricks Pro arrived for review in two big cartons which contain a lot of foam packing material to protect the glass table top during transportation.
Once unpacked, we were left with the frame, desktop and feet of the EG8 Comhar, as well as a manual, power cable and all the bolts needed to assemble the desk. FlexiSpot also includes two plastic cable clamps to help you organize all cables after the desk is assembled.
Since the EG8 Comhar has a glass desktop, FlexiSpot recommends laying down a blanket or using the desk box to protect it during assembly. This goes for other standing desks as well, and it can be quite easy to scratch a desktop or even your floor when assembling it.
Assembly of the EG8 Comhar begins with attaching the frame to the desktop with eight bolts (four on each side).
Once the frame is attached, you will need to reinstall the desk legs at both ends with eight bolts (four on each side).
From here, it’s just a matter of plugging the desk’s motor into the power adapter on the back and plugging in the power cord before flipping the finished desk over. This is also a good time to use the included cable clamps to tidy up some of the cables so they don’t hang and fall into place when you turn the desk over.
FlexiSpot EG8 Comhar : In use
After a very short assembly process, it was time for us to test the EG8 Comhar ourselves. First of all, we programmed our favorite sitting and standing heights into the desk’s keyboard. Unlike other keyboards that require you to memorize different button combinations to save your presets, on the EG8 Comhar’s keyboard, hold down one of the numbered buttons for three seconds to save the current height of the desk under that preset. There’s also a lock button next to the keyboard’s USB-C port that can be used to enable the parental lock function, preventing the desk from being raised or lowered. In addition, the anti-collision function of the EG8 Comhar can prevent the desk from damaging or crushing other objects while it is in motion.
Because FlexiSpot does not make a cable tray for the EG8 Comhar, we tested the desk with a Chromebook. The desk was comfortable to use, easy to type on and the support bar between the two legs gave us a place to rest our legs. Since the desktop itself is made of glass, it can be used in the same way as a whiteboard UPLIFT v2 from UPLIFT Desk, one of the few standing desks that can be equipped with a whiteboard desktop. The glass top also makes the EG8 Comhar really easy to clean, but the glass can act as a fingerprint magnet of sorts.
The EG8 Comhar passed our coffee test, where we put a full cup of coffee on the desk and tried to raise and lower it without spilling a drop. Despite only having a single motor, the desk could be moved from a sitting to a standing position in just over ten seconds.
The EG8 Comhar is one of the few standing desks with an integrated storage drawer. The drawer is well built, easy to adjust and has more than enough space to store numerous items. We liked that we could place our laptop, a tablet, a power bank and other business accessories in the storage drawer of the EG8 Comhar for quick access. While we wish the drawer itself was a bit deeper, this would take away from the thin look of the EG8 Comhar’s desk frame.
Should I buy the FlexiSpot EG8 Comhar?
The Kana Pro Bamboo is another unique looking standing desk from FlexiSpot that also has a USB charging port on the keyboard. It’s slightly more expensive at $599 at the time of writing, but you can choose from a variety of desktop sizes and frame colors. Because it’s made of bamboo, you can also easily add a third-party cable tray to the bottom of the desk.
The Essential Electric Standing Desk by Vari is intended for use with a laptop, much like the EG8 Comhar, as there is no drawer for cable management. The desk itself can also be set up in minutes and is available in black or white. Although the Essential Electric Standing Desk has a single motor, like the EG8 Comhar, it has a higher load capacity of 68 kg and because it is made of laminate instead of glass it is possible to use a cable tray from another manufacturer . to be attached to the back.
