10 Common macOS Big Sur Problems and How to Fix Them

As we push away from Apple’s latest macOS Big Sur update, Mac users complain about a variety of bugs and performance issues.

The latest version of macOS Big Sur was tested behind the scenes, but unsurprisingly, issues slipped through the cracks to its final release.

The current list of macOS Big Sur issues includes abnormal battery consumption, Wi-Fi issues, lags, crashes, issues with first and third-party apps, and installation issues.

Many of these issues are brand new, others are inherited from the previous version(s) of macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

While some of these issues may require a fix from Apple in a new version of macOS Big Sur or a visit to your local Apple Store (if it’s open), you can fix the issues yourself.

In this guide, we’ll take you through solutions to the most advanced macOS Big Sur issues we’ve heard of and fixed ourselves.

If you find yourself running out of battery, having problems with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or having trouble installing macOS Big Sur, check out these solutions before picking up your phone or taking your Mac to a store.

Fix MacOS Big Sur Download Problems

A whole lot of people ran into download problems when they installed macOS Big Sur when it came out. Apple’s server problems are gone, but all Mac users have no problem downloading the latest version yet.

You may see download issues if your connection isn’t great. Lost connections and slow download speeds are two of the common issues we’ve seen.

If you run into download issues, try connecting an Ethernet cable to your Mac to download the macOS Big Sur update. This can fix some download issues and slow downloads.

If you can’t connect an Ethernet cable or if the problems persist, try restarting your router and/or your Mac. If neither of those work, you’ll need to take your Mac somewhere with a faster Internet connection.

Fix installation problems with macOS Big Sur

If you’re having trouble installing macOS Big Sur, make sure your Mac is compatible with the new operating system first. If not, you will not be able to install the software.

Here is the list of devices that are compatible with macOS Big Sur:

  • MacBook (2015 and later)
  • MacBook Air (2013 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (Late 2013 and later)
  • Mac mini (2014 and later)
  • iMac (2014 and later)
  • iMac Pro (2017 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2013 and later)

If the macOS Big Sur download has completed, but you are not prompted to install the operating system on your Mac, you will need to go from your Mac and locate the installation file. Double click on the file and macOS Big Sur should start installing on your computer.

If you run into an issue where the installation fails because your little Mac is booting and pressing Control + R during startup. This will put it in recovery mode.

From you want to ‘Boot on disk’ to start your computer normally. happened, you need to delete files that you no longer need to make room.

You can also try to roll back the Time Machine update you made right before you started (if you did). This will take you back to your Mac’s previous version of macOS and allow you to delete files.

How to Fix macOS Big Sur Bluetooth Issues

If you’re having trouble with Bluetooth connections on macOS Big Sur, here are a few solutions you can try.

Try to turn Bluetooth off first and then turn it back on. you do this, make sure you have a way to plug in a computer to turn it back on.

If that doesn’t work, try removing the problem Bluetooth device. That’s how you do that:

  1. Click on the Bluetooth icon in the top right corner of your screen.
  2. Open Bluetooth preferences.
  3. Click on the device, remove it and start the pairing process.

If you can’t get Bluetooth to work at all, you may need to delete the Bluetooth plist file. To do this:

  1. Go to Finder.
  2. Click on Macintosh HD.
  3. Click on Library.
  4. Scroll down and go to the Preferences folder.
  5. Find a file called ‘com.apple.Bluetooth.plist’.
  6. Delete this file or move it to a safe place.
  7. Restart your Mac and try to connect again.

Apple also suggests restarting your Mac and then creating another user to see if Bluetooth works for a new user on the device.

MacOS Big Sur Wi-Fi Troubleshooting

If you’re having trouble with your Mac’s Wi-Fi connection, try these solutions.

First click on WiFi in the menu bar and turn it off. Wait 10-15 seconds and turn it back on. This has often solved problems for us in the past.

If you’re still having trouble, see if you can connect to a different Wi-Fi network. If your other devices can connect to the network that your Mac connects to, you can try your Mac and reboot the router.

Fix MacOS Big Sur FaceTime Problems

If you’re having trouble placing FaceTime calls, here’s what you want to do: make sure Apple isn’t having any issues. If FaceTime has a green symbol next to it, the problems are probably on your side.

Make sure your Mac is properly connected to your hotspot’s Wi-Fi. If so, FaceTime is not disabled. You can check this by going to the FaceTime app and clicking “FaceTime” in the top left corner.

If FaceTime is on and you’re connected to a cellular network’s Wi-Fi, try restarting your Mac.

Troubleshooting the macOS Big Sur app

If your applications are not working properly on macOS Big Sur, the first thing you should do is check for an update. Developers roll out support updates and they can help stabilize an app’s performance.

If you’re still having trouble, try restarting your Mac. If that doesn’t help, you can also try uninstalling and downloading the app again.

If you are unable to resolve the issue yourself, please contact the app developer and make sure they are aware of the issue. If so, there is a possible practice solution for an update that fixes the problem.

Fix performance issues with macOS Big Sur

If your Mac integrates directly onto the macOS Big Surgery installation, you’re not the engine.

In general, you should wait about a day to improve the performance of the software. If you’re still having problems with macOS Big Sur after a few days, try restarting your Mac and see if things improve.

If your Mac is still slow, you may need to perform a clean macOS Big Sur install. A clean install can have a huge impact on your Mac’s performance.

MacOS Big Sur Touch ID Troubleshooting

If you have a Mac with Touch ID and Touch ID isn’t working on the move to macOS Big Sur, don’t panic. You should be able to fix the problem yourself.

Before you do anything, try to update your fingerprint. Go to the System Preferences app and go through the installation process. If re-adding your fingerprint doesn’t work, you should: reset your Mac’s SMC.

If your mouse has stopped working on macOS Big Sur and you’re sure it’s not a hardware problem, you’ll want to delete two files on your computer.

  1. Go to Finder.
  2. Click on Macintosh HD.
  3. Click on Library.
  4. Scroll down and go to the Preferences folder.
  5. Find a file called ‘com.apple.Bluetooth.plist’.
  6. Delete this file or move it to a safe place.
  7. Locate a file called ‘com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse.plist’.
  8. Delete this file or move it to a safe place.
  9. Restart your Mac and try your mouse again.

Update your Mac

Apple will periodically release new software. Usually a combination of features and solutions are focused on bug fixes, targeted upgrades.

The company may not provide general solutions (eg a fix for Bluetooth issues) in the change log of an update, but new software can always help.
